Episode Ideas/Requests

Post by mr-russ » Sat Apr 14, 2012 6:44 am

I'm sure others like I have a few ideas for episodes we'd like to see. So I've kicked off a thread to allow others to put there ideas up.

I'd be really interesting in seeing episodes on;

- Controlling appliances, especially things like heaters and evaporative air conditioning. Especially any work done or ideas on how to interface to those proprietory systems.

- A what if episode of what are some grand ideas to get the creative juices going about what can be done a few sensors, lighting and access control.

I'm sure everybody will have 1000 other ideas. Hopefully we don't all overwhelm Jon.

Great idea! Please, if anyone has ideas for things they'd like to see covered, feel free to post about it here.

Interfacing with existing devices that are not designed to be integrated is a really important topic. It's probably something I'll cover in multiple episodes, because my general approach is to modify everyday devices rather than buy super-expensive things designed for automation. I've already done a hacky job of controlling a Rinnai Infinity hot water system (featured on a quick video I did a few years ago) but right now that interface is not even being used because it turned out to be impractical. I need to revisit it and reverse engineer the Rinnai comms protocol instead.

We also have an evaporative cooler and a gas central heater, so both of those will need some hacking to connect them up.

I would be interested in hearing more about the messaging infrastructure you are putting in place. Some things you could highlight are:
  • Message format
  • Topic format
  • Subscription strategy - how and if you use wild cards
  • Troublshooting messages
  • What on premise MQTT broker are you using
  • How you are using the broker off premise - just data collection or cross communication between houses
  • Any authentication being used for the off premise broker
  • Do you intend to publish MQTT messages directly from JAVAScript on the touch screens
  • Are the subscriptions transient - on a power cycle of a broker do all clients have to re-subscribe
  • How you intend to address single point of failure of a broker
  • Did you look at any other Pub/Sub alternatives before settling on MQTT
  • What benefits MQTT gave you over other alternatives
Thanks
Mike

I'm definitely going to talk a lot more about MQTT and the rest of the software stack in future videos, and your list is a pretty good checklist of things to cover!

This is a bit of a brain dump but what better place to put it?

Central control
- MQTT setup (Mosquitto stuff)
- Logic setup (PHP stuff)
- Backup/federation of each/both
- web interface
- mobile interface

Heating
- temp sensing
- door state logic
- valve logic (assuming hydronic heating)
- water temp/flow control (again, assumes hydronic)

Cooling
- temp sensing
- door state logic
- remote input (either web-based or IR)
- zone control/presence logic
- output/balance air flow

Weather
- outside/Inside temp/humidity
- barometric pressure
- wind direction/speed
- rainfall
- data logging of all sensors
- incoming weather
- predictive weather (pattern analysis)
- linked alerts (BOM)

Garden
- soil condition sensing (moisture)
- watering valves
- planting schedule (food crop)
- harvest schedule (food harvest)
- harvest yield/weights (manual entry?)

Security
- PoE x.264 IP cameras (simple, PTZ)
- RFID readers
- electronic door strikes
- electric shutters
- servo dead-locks

Lighting
- switching
- scenes
- presence
- SSR/EMR switching
- PWM dimming
- LED & 6/12V systems
- DMX512 integration
