Snubber circuit... I have fried two atmegas

Hello.

I am running my dmd and arduino with lipo batteries and a 5v 3A ubec (this one http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4319).

I have implemented a switch to go from "normal power" to "suber bright power", but I needed two atmegas328 to realize what was happening..... I need a snubber circuit. When I turned the "super bright power" ON or OFF..... circuit goes FRIED .

I have googled a lot but I am not able to know how to make my snubbler circuit. Please, can someone help?

EDIT: may be implemented with a diode?. Hell yah! I don´t find the solution

Maybe a Transient Voltage Supressor diode???.

Please, I need help,... I don´t want to destroy any more atmegas. I don´t know how to solve this problem, I have read a lot of RC snubbers, but I don´t understand much words and how to calculate the rc values. Later I have read some about this diodes. Can I use one of these? I think yes, but I don´t know wich one... uffff, and just now is too hot (more than 30ºC) and I can not think well xD

I think this should be a very easy question for most people, but for me it´s crazy.

two atmega chips, ouch, you replacing them by simply pulling them out the socket and replacing them?.. for example some boards simply of the atmega mounted, once fried you may as well throw the whole thing out unless you have the tools to remove/solder heat gun it again.

anyway...

I'm confused, the arduino can only supply 40ma of current per pin (140? something total) so, ideally you need to use a Transistor, i don't think a 222 transistor would cut it, first of all you need to know how much current you're going to need.

so for example, let's say you buy a TIP31 transistor, on the gate, you have your arduino pin out (via a suitable resistor depending on your load - stick to 300 ohms you'll be safe for the digital out pin to gate)

the collector/emitter goes to the device you want to power.

But how exactly are you doing this?
