newbie uploading problem

Post by MiloT » Fri Apr 03, 2015 5:19 am

I have Freetronics Eleven experimenters kit.
PC is Asus eee PC running XP (Chrome Browser)
I have downloaded, unzipped, and run the USB downloader software.
Checked Device Manager then connected "Eleven" and the list updates and shows correct device name and as on Com 4. Red light blinks.
Wired up the "Blink" breadboard and the LED on that blinks correctly.
Downloaded Arduino IDE and ran it.
Tools>Ports set to COM4 - shows as ticked. This page does not change regardless of board plugged in or not - should it?
Opened Blink and modified the timing settings then attempted to upload to the Arduino board - no luck.
Error message:
"avrdude: usbdev_open(): did not find any USB device "usb"

tried the troubleshooting tips on Arduino website - disabled Bluetooth drivers and followed the Loop Back test instructions - fail - no echo.

My very uneducated guess is that the Arduino hardware is being recognised by the device driver part of the PC but the Arduino software is not communicating with the board - is this right?

And HOW DO I FIX IT?

Check you have the board type in the Tools menu set to "Arduino Uno", and double-check the COM: port number in the device manager as this can change.

Furthermore as you're using Windows XP please try our older USB driver:
http://www.freetronics.com.au/pages/ins ... or-windows
http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0045/8 ... B_v1_3.zip

You can use the latest version of the Arduino IDE from arduino.cc.

Thanks for reply.
Have loaded the earlier version (V1.3) of driver - still same problem
Was using latest Arduino IDE but have rolled that back to V 1.0.6 since the latest version is reported to be giving problems.
But either way, the result is the same - I can not load program changes (sketch updates)
error Msg avrdude: ser_send(): write error sorry no info avbl

This means you have the wrong serial port selected in the IDE.
When you restart the PC or reconnect the board the COM: port number may change.

Using usb driver v1.3 and IDE ver 1.06 trying to upload ""blink" as issued..............

Error msg:

system wide configuration file is C:\.......arduino\hardware/toolos/avr/etgc/avrdude.conf"
avrdude: error at c:\...etc/avrdude.conf: 332: programmer type must be written as "id_type"

Still not able to upload to board - in Tools>Programmer I see the programmer is set at AVRISP mkII .... I have not changed this setting.

Advice Please?

Set that to USBasp.
Failing that completely delete and reinstall the IDE, or try a different PC with a fresh driver and IDE install.
