New 1284P-powered board suggestions

Do you have an idea for a device that you think Freetronics should create? Discuss your ideas here! Sometimes we may even give you a sneak peek at secret projects we have in the pipeline, or ask for feedback on designs before they go into production.

+1 to that. I don't think a complete rework is needed - Goldilocks with those fixes and a new proto board gets my vote.

I see two different directions for a 1284P board.

1 - Fix the current Goldilocks design errata, with all the extra features. Higher cost.

2 - Have a much lower cost Uno drop-in replacement with just more RAM and Flash support. This should be the same size form factor as the Uno to support some cases and shield designs. I am seeing all too often with the growing popularity of RGB LED strips and matrices that the Uno can't sufficiently support with the limited RAM. But they often have to modify their design to fit the Mega pinouts and form factor. If they had an Uno drop-in replacement this would be a no-brainer.

Has there been a verdict?

Oh no, not yet. A few more weeks at least before we sit down and determine the future board.

How about an EtherTen with the 1284P as it's just too easy to run out of program memory with projects using ethernet. A MAC chip and RTC, 2nd serial port like the Goldilocks.

We have the EtherDue coming soon which covers all of that except for RTC.

Is it EtherTen /Goldilocks size?

No, it's Due/Mega footprint.

I would like to see a Pro Mini / Fio size board with the 1284p (and dual row headers at both sides to use the extra ports). The Uno size is ok for experimenting but not for using in a small enclosure. It would be nice if there was room for a lipo charger circuit (Fio) so that the board could be used remotely, with dual power.

I am very new to microcontrollers, but most of the projects I have thought of all require RS232. If there are extra UARTS, it would be nice to one converted to an RS232.

Also, ethernet would be nice.

Some thoughts (coming from someone with little experience):

- I also like the suggestion of the JTAG. I haven't used one yet. I read something about being able to cascade them. Would it make sense to use the ATmega32u2 as the primary JTAG connection and chain to the 1284P?
- It also might make sense to have as many as the non-standard things coming off the ATmega32u2.
- If you didn't care about USB, you could add a second 1284P instead of the ATmega32u2. Or even a 2560 as an IO co-processor.
