The Project Showcase competition

Post by jonoxer » Thu Nov 03, 2011 5:43 am

As mentioned on our blog already, we're running a Project Showcase competition to encourage people to post write-ups of their projects. Marc and I love seeing the things people build so we're partly doing this for selfish reasons: we ship a lot of devices out but don't often see the end result of the projects they go into, so this is a way for us to get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing they're being put to good use.

So for the month of November we're inviting anyone who has built an Arduino-based project to do a quick post in the Project Showcase section of the forum, and at the end of the month we'll pick one as the winner of a Freetronics Inventors Kit containing an Eleven, some Prototyping Shields, a Terminal Shield, an LCD & Keypad Shield, and a selection from our range of new add-on modules that are about to be released.

Judging will be by Marc and myself and is completely arbitrary - it doesn't need to be the most complex project, or the cleverest, or the most well presented. It'll just be the one that we like the best! So if you've built something you're proud of, don't be shy. Let us know about it.

And no, we can't be bribed with beer. Neither of us like it that much. Chocolate, on the other hand...

So get to it!

So is there anyway we can add a photo to our showcase items?

Short answer: I think so! I'm not particularly familiar with phpBB (I only just set this up and don't have much experience with it) but you should be able to embed images. The online help says you can, at least:

faq.php#f3r3

You may not be able to upload files until you've made 3 posts (based on my novice reading of the back-end settings) but if the image is on another service such as your blog you should be able to embed it.

Funny thing is that I was just visiting the forum to post about exactly that, and saw your question! Good timing.

So, cutting to the chase, the winner for November* is user @agronaught for his "generator monitor" project:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=30

The reason we particularly liked this project was that it's a clever, practical solution to a real problem with no obvious "off the shelf" alternative. It takes a few relatively simple elements and combines them to make a custom "product" that's probably cheaper than would be achieved by a specialised, dedicated device that would need to be produced in small volume. This points out an interesting aspect of Arduino: it's a generalised board for a wide range of applications, so it hits economy of scale faster than devices that may be designed specifically to do just one thing. This leads to the non-obvious result that a custom system based on an Arduino can sometimes be cheaper than a purpose-built product that may be far more optimised for that purpose in its design.

Anyway, I digress.

As mentioned at the start of this thread, the prize is a pack consisting of an Eleven, some Prototyping Shields, a Terminal Shield, an LCD & Keypad Shield, and some of the modules from our new range at http://www.freetronics.com/collections/modules. @agronaught, to claim your prize please email me at jon@freetronics.com or ping me via direct message on the forum. You can pick any 5 of the modules from the collection (which could be any combination: 5 different, 5 of the same whatever) so let me know which ones you'd like.

Thanks to everyone who has shared their projects on this forum: for me personally it's been very exciting seeing the range of things that people do with our devices and with Arduino in general.

* Oh yeah, about that "for November" comment. We're thinking about running this again, perhaps even making it a regular thing. So keep those projects coming!
