I think my problem is coming from the direct link I have to the battery via the voltage divider, as I made a small mistake and the ground wire on the divider smoked. I need to find an dc - dc opto isolator.

Hi Scott,

You can get DC/DC opto isolated supplies, or you can get USB isolating hubs as I posted in the other thread.

Ok I found the source of my problem. It was in my battery charger, the printed circuit board which slides into the ali housing was a little to small and it dropped out of the support slot. The positive rail on the circuit board came into contact with the Ali and I had a positive earth fault on my system, then when I plugged in the laptop power supply which has a negitive to earth bond, the result is smoke & damage.
