Using iPhone's 5v charger

Post by charlest » Mon Jul 29, 2013 10:14 pm

Hi, Can you please tell me whether it's possible to use an iPhone's 5v (1A) charger as a power input?

Yes, this will work fine. (I actually have a different project at home where I'm using one of the new 12W iPad chargers as it's the most readily available charger that can deliver 2.2A @ 5V!)

If you want to move the LeoStick further away so it's not plugged directly into the iPhone charger, you can get USB A->A extension leads as well.

Regards,

Angus

Thanks for your reply.

I've tried LeoStick with the iPhone's charger as a power input.
Doesn't seem to work when it's directly plugged into the charger.
Fortunately, it works fine with via a usb extension cable.
Do you know why?

Interesting. My LeoStick works fine with an iPhone 3GS charger I have here. Presumably it doesn't work at all for you (ie no power light comes on?)

All I can think of is that it may be a mechanical gap between the pins in the charger and the LeoStick contacts. If you wiggle the LeoStick around does it come on? If you look into the USB receptacle in the charger, there are two metal tabs in the bottom side that are designed to press the connector up against the 4 contact "fingers" on top. Can you very carefully bend these up at all, perhaps, to exert more pressure on the stick?

Thanks for your tips. It's working fine without the usb cable.
