LED / DOT matrix display 128 x 16

Post by simon419 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 11:51 pm

Hi, I have a 128 x 16 display and I was wondering if I could power this off an Arduino?

I have noticed that most of the pin layouts are two sets of 8 (I have attached a picture) like this: Image

Whereas mine are like this

is there a way to connect this up?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Simon

The pins look completely compatible by name, however it's possible there will be some niggling difficulties to work through once you fire it up. I would expect to be able to control it rather than power it by Arduino however just to be safe. Are there other pins for DC power on your PCB?

Hi Geoff, thank you for your reply.

Do you know which pins would go where??

Yes there is DC, sorry I meant control by a Arduino not power :D

If you're starting with the Freetronics DMD as a guide (I would, but that's because it's the one I'm most familiar with) then the DMDCON connector board has pinouts to the DMD which are similarly named to the ones on your board.

The DMDCON schematic is found here. Follow those connections to wire it between your Arduino and the DMD. Now it's unlikley in my view that you'll get this to run out of the box, but it would be worth trying the DMD library (linked from the product page above) and see whether you get any kind of response from the thing at all.

Based on the wiring being similar I'd be hoping that it's controlled similarly, using 595 shift registers, but from there all bets are off to the underlying design and how it's driven. That's where your fun starts.

Cheers !
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

I will try and see if / which shift registers it uses.

Thanks :)

Do you have an Arduino and some connecting wire? That's all you need to start with this. Are you sure this display functions?

No not yet as I wasn't 100% sure. And yes, it comes on and displays "Add# :001"
