Cable Length

I'm thinking about making this an overhead display using a Mega and keypad. To do this, I would need about 20ft of wire going from the Mega to the display. Is this length of wire practical and will it work?

jsmiller12009,

The short answer is no!

The data lines are direct from the processor - no other buffers or drivers. Their limit will be in inches rather than feet.

How about having the processor close to the display and a use a serial interface for your input/control?

We're reliably getting a little over 1m through a shielded cable with DB15 connectors at each end, but as Brissieboy wrote I'd not expect a longer run will work.

When asked if we could put a display remotely we had also toyed with the idea of having a standalone controller board on the back of the DMD array and having it interpret received commands and display data sent over a wireless connection but haven't gone any further with that concept just yet.

Cheers ! Geoff
