Hi Angus,

I've plugged a 12VDC supply to it and it heated up really quickly to the same heat intensity as with the PoE.

That sounds unusual.

If there's nothing else connected to the EtherTen and it still does this then it's probably faulty. Contact support at freetronics.com and we'll arrange a replacement.

For what it’s worth, I had one exactly the same as this.
The etherten it was connected to ran way too hot to touch.
I removed the regulator and binned it guessing it was a design issue. The etherten is a great board and runs nice and cool on external power. You could fry an egg on the thing with that POE thing though. It probably doesn’t meet the promised 802.3af specs.
